ESSENTIAL LIGHTING GUIDE

Helmet, check. Bike pre-ride inspection, check. Cycling lights, check.
The way we see it, cycling lights are an essential part of the sport. Whether you’re commuting or training for your next big event; Having the right light can be the difference between smashing through OR avoiding that pot hole up ahead, keeping your wheels true and in-line. We offer high powered systems with ease of control and use. Allowing you to climb that ascent on low power and on the other end more fun awaits. Push the easy access power button to switch modes into high. Light up your path as you barrel down the mountain side switchbacks for a speedy descent. No matter how you ride or when you ride (day or night), our diverse product line is sure to offer you a light that meets your cycling needs.

Power and Brightness
A lights intensity is measured in lumens. Below, we’ve assembled a chart to display the various lumen outputs that our head lights produce. Starting at 32 lumens (lms); If your goal is simply “To be seen” and be more noticeable, we have options that are very budget friendly and feature flash patterns that will increase your visibility. For the average commuter and leisure cyclist that travel illuminated city roads lined with street lights, using a light featuring a minimum of 200 lumens should be sufficient. If you’re a road cyclist moving at a sporting pace or if you frequent poorly lit or unlit country roads, we’d recommend a light with a lumen output of 350lms to 1100lms for the front.

For easy trail riding down an unpaved path, we’d recommend using a head light that features a minimum of 750lms. Ripping through pitch-dark mountain trails, when the only light out is the moonlight? We recommend a light output of 1400lms at the very least. And for high level technical riding we’d recommend pairing your handlebar set-up with a helmet mounted light to vastly improve your line of sight to see whats around the bend.

Beam Pattern and Spread
Throughout our head light product line, our engineers have selected bright, quality CREE LEDs and paired them with NiteRiders’ proprietary custom reflectors. This delivers a cycling specific beam pattern with an intense spot light for increased distance visibility and with great flood fill to see whats up ahead.

Our Pro Series line was specifically designed for MTB conditions, featuring larger reflectors and lenses’ that allow for a wider beam pattern and spread. The very capable Lumina Series line is no slouch, the beam pattern is more narrow in comparison with the Pro Series. But the custom reflector brings an intense spot that highlights up coming obstacles, packaged in one self-contained lighting system with no wires or external batteries.

Replaceable batteries or USB Rechargeable
Swap out batteries on the fly or tap into an energy source to charge? These are points to keep in mind when purchasing your new light. Consider how much saddle time you put in each week. Are you a dedicated bicycle commuter using your bike day in and day out? If so, how would you like to deliver power to your light? Our USB Rechargeable lights offer the convenience of plugging in your light to recharge. They also feature a built-in low battery indicator so you know when it’s time to recharge.

If cycling is something that you do on occasion for leisure, just cruising, or going for a quick pedal down to the market; our lower lumen, alkaline battery head lights from 150lms – 250lms will suffice. These lights will have extended run times over the USB Rechargeable counterparts because of the lower power draw/use. Use these tips to guide you through your future lighting system purchase. Ride on.
