BEFORE THERE WAS A COMPANY CALLED NITERIDER, THERE WAS SIMPLY A SURFER WHO WASN’T READY FOR THE ADVENTURE TO END BECAUSE THE SUN HAD GONE DOWN.

THAT BELIEF BECAME NITERIDER. SINCE 1989, WE’VE BUILT PURPOSE-DESIGNED LIGHTING FOR CYCLISTS, COMMUTERS, MOUNTAIN BIKERS, POWERSPORTS RIDERS, AND OUTDOOR PROFESSIONALS.

It Started with One Question

What if darkness wasn't the end of the adventure?

For Tom Carroll, it was never a marketing idea. It was a real problem.

In the 1980s, after long days building homes in Southern California, the surf and trails were still calling but daylight was gone.

Unable to find lighting that was bright, waterproof, lightweight, and reliable enough for the ocean, Tom designed his own.

Before There Was NiteRider

Long before NiteRider, Tom Carroll was a surfboard shaper, builder, surfer, designer, and craftsman growing up in La Jolla, California.

The coast, canyons, and surf shaped how he thought about performance: every curve has a purpose, every line matters, and quality starts long before the final product.

Those lessons became the foundation of NiteRider. Performance was never added at the end of the process. It was built in from the start.

NITERIDER DIDN’T BEGIN IN A FACTORY.

It began around a kitchen table.

By day, Tom designed custom homes. At night, he and Veronica assembled lighting systems by hand, packed orders, and made late-night runs to the San Diego Post Office.

Those early years shaped the NiteRider mindset that still holds today:

Build carefully.

Test relentlessly.

Solve real problems.

Keep improving.

Engineered by Experience

Every NiteRider product starts in the real world.

On mountain trails. Along coastal roads. Across desert race courses. In the Pacific Ocean. Underwater.

We do not design around marketing trends. We design around the conditions riders actually face after dark.

Each generation reflects years of riding, testing, refinement, and engineering built to become a natural extension of the rider, not a distraction.

Discover the Night

Discover the Night is more than a slogan. It is the belief that darkness does not end the adventure it changes it.

The road is quieter. The trail feels different. The ride asks more of you.

The right lighting does not replace that experience. It gives riders the confidence to keep going whether the destination is home, the next corner, or somewhere farther out.

For more than three decades, that belief has guided every NiteRider product, innovation, and decision.

The Story Continues

More than thirty-five years after Tom Carroll built the first NiteRider lighting system, the mission remains the same.

The technology has evolved.

The products have evolved.

The riders have evolved.

The philosophy has not.

Every early commute, late ride, trail, road, race, and after-dark adventure is part of the same story that began on the Southern California coast in 1989.

Some people see darkness as the end of the day.

We have always seen it as the beginning of something more.

BUILT TO SOLVE WHAT DARKNESS CHANGES

NiteRider did not begin with a product roadmap. It began with a real problem: how to keep going when daylight runs out.

From early helmet-mounted systems and intelligent rechargeable lighting to secure mounts and wider rider visibility, the technology has always been shaped by real rides, real conditions, and the people using it after dark.
